Yes, yes, I know what you are all thinking, "your last update was October and since then, NOTHING!" On a much happier note, it feels SO GOOD to have time to write! Today's outfit has a little bit of back story to it. When I was younger, I would say I hated wearing any traditional clothing from Nigeria. On my 13th birthday party, my mom made two specially designed traditional clothing for the occasion and while my friends showed up to the celebration wearing t-shirts and jeans, I was all decked out in traditional wear. You could say my 13-year-old mind was mortified. Back then, I would be honest and say that I never had an appreciation for my culture. I was never proud of standing out, being and looking different and for a long time, I would say that one of my greatest strive was to fit in.
Well, ladies and gentleman, NO MORE! Why fit in when you could stand out? By that, I simply mean that instead of trying to hide your uniqueness, embrace it. I'm honestly tired of everyone trying to fit a certain "bubble" because you spend more time trying to fit someone else's definition of perfection. One hard truth that I have learned is trying to please everyone is a recipe for stress, misery, and frustration. Be yourself. It'll be good to know who is down with that. With that being said, today's outfit is my way of saying I couldn't be more proud of my cultural background, because, without it, a part of my identity will be incomplete.
Until next time,
